MENTAL Team Tournament Rules
Registration, Rules etc.
1.1 - Each participant is encouraged to read the posted rules before registering for the tournament. The tournament will be governed by the posted rules.
1.2 - Teams/Players are encouraged to pre-register for the Tournament. The fee is $80 per Team before April 18, 2026.
1.3 - Registration will be $100 per Team after April 18, 2026.
1.4 - Players (s) can choose to register for both. A refund will be offered once the player decides.
Section 2 - Tournament Format
2.1 -The format is Knockout style.
2.2 - The bracket is randomly selected by an App/Website.
2.3 - The bracket will be fixed, meaning that you will be able to see the matchups as the bracket is filled out all the way to the final. This is similar to World Cup Soccer, NCAA basketball or Wimbledon style.
2.4 -Winners advance. Final round win by 2.
2.5- The bracket will update automatically after the round scores are inputted.
2.6 - Each round is first to 10 or (Time limit to be announced will be factored in
once the entries are known)**.
2.7 - If a player must leave for any reason the Team forfeits. The opponent will
advance to the next round. A team cannot replace members once the tournament
has started
Section 3
Shuffling etc.
For shuffling we have the following recommendations:
Either team could shuffle at any point
The last team to shuffle, should allow the opponent draw first
If there is a dispute the team with the lowest score should shuffle last, if the score is tied the team that won the last game should shuffle last
Start Of Play etc.
3.1 - Double 6 will start the first game with play proceeding anti-clockwise until
the game is blocked or the first player to play all seven dominoes in the hand.
3.2 - If a player draws more than 7 cards, the cards should remain face down until
the opponent(s) choose as needed.
3.3 - The winning team will pose the rest of the games
3.4 - Either member of the winning team can pose
3.5 - A player may instruct the partner to pose once. The partner may accept or
decline.
3.6 - If a player halts the partners pose, then that player must pose immediately
no further discussions, (Warning for first offence, after that game is awarded to the
opponent for any further breach of this rule during that round).
Switching sides etc.
4.1 - Teams cannot switch sides before the opposing Team is at 3.
4.2 - There should be at least one game completed before the opponents can switch
4.3 - If the opponent does not switch the team must play a minimum of 3 games before
switching (to the previous seating)
4.4 - Each team will have 2 switches per round
Table Holder etc.
5.1 - Each player should place cards in the holder for all players to see the
remaining dominoes
5.2 - Teams will be allowed a few seconds at the start of each game to arrange the
dominoes.
5.3 - Keep hands below the table.
5.4 - A player must play the first domino that is touched (with holders)
Exposed Dominoes etc.
6.1 - If a card is exposed before the pose, reshuffle.
6.2 - If a card is accidentally exposed during the game, that card may be allowed
to play on the player’s next turn or forfeit. (The ref should be called to resolve
the issue)
6.3 - If a card accidentally falls off the table while being played, it will be allowed
into the game***.
6.4 - The player in the lead, can expose the hand. However, the player must wait
for the opponents to concede before breaking up the game.
Talking, Signing etc
7.1 - NO UNNECESSARY TALKING during the game.
7.2 - Players are allowed to speak during pose, pass, verifying pass etc. as needed
during the game
7.3 - Players should use words such as “pass”, “no play” etc. if there is no playable
domino in the hand.
7.4 - Partners should have discussions between the games.
7.5 - A knock is not considered a pass. Opponents should verify the pass before playing
7.6 Players are not allowed to use signs or body language to communicate with partners.
7.7 Players are supposed to place the dominoes on the table without slamming or
exaggerating during play.
7.8 - Players are not supposed to touch the dominoes unnecessarily during the
game.
Block Scenarios etc:
8.1 - If the game is blocked, individual count.
8.2 - If there is a tie, double 6 will pose the next game.
8.3 - The winner of the first tie-breaker will get 2 points (maximum score)
8.4 - If any more games are required to break the tie, the teams must continue to play until there is a decisive winner (2 pts).
Scoring Etc
9.1 - Either team can mark the scoresheet.
9.2 - Each player is responsible to verify the reported score.
9.3 - The winning team should hand in the scoresheet to the Tournament Official.
9.4 - The referee will keep the official score sheets.
9.5 - Teams can keep track of the score at the table if they choose.
Warnings and Penalties
Time violation - Players that consistently take a long time to play will be warned and ultimately be timed each play (failure to play in 15 seconds will result in the loss of the game in progress)
Seating - Players who are not seated on time will lose points (see rule )
Touching but not playing domino or unnecessarily (out of turn etc.)**
Not playing the first card touched on a player’s turn
Attempting to play a domino then decide to play another domino**
Slamming or excessive/aggressive behaviour
Shuffling hand after looking at it**
